Gardening at home

Home gardening has turned into a more and more popular way of spending free time available. Research shows that the number of people gardening as a hobby has never been higher in America. Out of each 10 households, the United States count at least 8 that have taken up home gardening to whatever extend. Considering how many people get involved in gardening, this would quite easily make gardening the nation’s most favorite hobby.

Just about any beginner gardener will plant a selection of flowers, as they make an easy start to gardening. Although everybody knows about roses, they actually will take up a lot of your time and care, and are probably better left for gardeners with some more experience. There is a wide range of flowers available to choose from, from annuals, perennials to bulbs.

Home gardening can also be used to grown your own edible plants. Actually eating plants you grew yourself is one of the most rewarding things of gardening. Just use your imagination, and the sky is the limit when it comes to edible plants. Plants most grown for their edible harvest are peas, corn, potatoes, squash, cucumber and carrots. Fruits are another option, and could include peaches, apples, apricots, pears, watermelons, plums and tomatoes. Smaller fruits that need less looking after and don’t require a lot of space, and for these reasons being an attractive choice to grow, are raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. As you can use herbs in your kitchen, they are very popular and worth growing in the garden; common choices are thyme, parsley, cilantro and oregano. Make sure that you keep an eye out for signs of plant diseases and damaging insects, as you wouldn’t like to put in all the effort to grow herbs without the change of harvesting a healthy crop.

Landscaping your garden is also considered to be part of what we call home gardening. Landscaping includes creating all types of gardens and specifying areas in your garden. Even making sure your lawn is well cared for could be considered landscaping. Talking about grass, there are lots of varieties of decorative grasses often used in landscaping, as they look great and require very little maintenance. Popular choices are pampa grass, monkey grass, flame grass, ornamental millet and buffalo grass. Apart from your choice and layout of plants, landscaping is also defined by any stones and rocks carefully placed in the garden, a pond or other water feature, sculptures, etc.

It doesn’t matter where you do gardening, as gardening somewhere else and gardening at home are pretty much the same. In all garden, plants need to be carefully planted under the right conditions. They all want water and nutrients to keep healthy. There is nothing to be scared of when it comes to home gardening. If you have given it a try, but you don’t turn out to have a green thumb, there is nothing to be ashamed off. If you wish you could do a bit more reading about gardening and assemble more information, and make a fresh start next year.
